Capital Crimes

About

What is this and why does it hurt?

The Concept

Every time you spend money on something, you're implicitly choosing not to invest it. Capital Crimes quantifies that choice — in real dollars, with a verdict.

Enter a purchase amount, the year you made it, and a benchmark. We fetch real historical prices, compute what those shares would be worth today, and tell you exactly how badly you fumbled it.

Modes

Lump Sum

One-time investment at the start year. All the money, all at once, immediately regretting it.

Dollar-Cost Average (DCA)

Monthly contributions over the full period. Simulates what consistent investing would have built, month by month.

What You Get

  • Opportunity delta — the raw dollar amount you missed
  • Multiple and annualized CAGR
  • Labor equivalent — how many work hours that missed return represents
  • Inflation-adjusted real value (toggle on/off)
  • Portfolio vs. principal chart over time
  • Benchmark comparison — add up to 4 benchmarks side-by-side
  • Project Forward — compound your result at a custom annual return
  • Calculation history, saved locally in your browser
  • 1080×1920 share card for Instagram and TikTok

How the Math Works

  1. Your amount is converted to USD using the current live rate.
  2. We fetch monthly adjusted-close prices from the start year to today.
  3. Shares = your amount ÷ start price.
  4. End value = shares × today's price.
  5. Opportunity delta = end value − what you put in.
  6. CAGR = (end value ÷ principal)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.
  7. Crime level is determined by the end value multiple.

Roast lines are picked deterministically — same inputs always produce the same line. Results are displayed in your chosen currency.

Data Sources

Market prices are fetched server-side via the Yahoo Finance v8 chart API (monthly adjusted-close). FX rates are sourced from exchangerate-api.com. Both are cached in memory for up to one hour. No data is stored on our servers.
